An Interview with Julie Hanan

We are obsessed with wedding invitations. For a bride, they're really special when it comes to spreading the news about her big day! And what better way to say it through beautiful graphic design and pretty colored paper? Dress it up in ribbon or twine, and you have yourself a gorgeous invite to send out to family and friends. So how do you choose the designer who best suits your needs? Research your favoite styles! Today we spoke with Julie Hanan about her wedding invitations! Check out the interview and her beautiful designs below. We hope you enjoy!

How did you get started on wedding invitations?

I actually fell into the invitation business on accident. I previously worked as an Interior Designer for a large company and unfortunately lost my job due to the economy. After looking for a job (without much success), a few close friends of mine were getting married and I offered to design their invitations for them since I had done graphic design work since I was young. Soon after designing their invitations, other friends saw my work and quickly asked for my pricing. I soon realized that I could turn my hobby into a business and Julie Hanan Design officially opened in 2010. I focus mainly on wedding and party invitations/stationery, however I do some side graphic design jobs for businesses as well!

What are your favorite materials?

I love any kind of embellishment that makes the invitation a little special. IE: Ribbon, Twine, Raffia.  I received my degree in Industrial Design, so having a product design background has really made me focus on the entire presentation rather than just on each individual card.

Whats the craziest invitation youíve been asked to design?

I used to do more custom work than I do now, but every now and then I will do some custom jobs for close friends and family. A few crazy jobs in the past have been some birthday invitations. One girl wanted an invitation for a 1st birthday party and we used hand-made rice paper mixed with ribbon, metallic papers, etc.. to give it a very soft and elegant look. Each invitation was die cut in the shape of a balloon. The invitation turned out amazing but it was definitely time consuming!

Ampersand or And?

What do you love most about your work?

I love the feeling I get once I send out an invitation set and knowing that each invitation was hand made and the utmost attention to detail is put into each and every invitation. Getting the email from the bride saying how much they (and their guests) love them makes me so happy and makes the whole process worthwhile!

What do you recommend to a bride looking for wedding invitations?

I definitely recommend checking around a lot of different sources from local shops, to online. I ask my brides how much a card at Hallmark costs, and look what you get for that cost. Research the pricing and come up with a realistic budget. Determine which style invitations you love the most and what type of feel that you want your invitation to set for your wedding since this is the first thing that your guests will see.
