Recently, we sat down with Laurel from Go Against the Grain, a shop specializing in all kinds of cupcake toppers, drink stirrers and labels for different occassions...including weddings! She was kind enough to let us know all the ins and outs of her absolutely adorable Etsy shop and give us a little discount goodie (see the end of her interview for more details.) We also added a few extra photos in the spirit of Halloween. Maybe you will be inspired to use that discount code?

We hope you enjoy!

How did you get started on your cupcake toppers?

I noticed that most cupcake toppers were in the shape of a circle and wanted to do something different. Buntings and pennants have always been popular so I tried out the flag shape and they are quite popular! They are a fun and simple way to add a little extra something.

When did you start designing for cupcakes?

I have always been a fan of cupcakes, even before they gained popularity. I started designing my cupcake flags around 2008 for holidays with my family.

Everyone would comment about how great they were so I thought I'd try selling em! Now I've branched out quite a bit to flags for drinking straws and other fun things you can use to adorn cupcakes and treats!

What are your favorite materials?

I would be lost with out my trusty Macbook Pro, some sharp scissors and a paper cutter, lots of colored cardstock, my printer and various types of adhesive.

What's the craziest project you've been asked to design?

I had a company called Knurture contact me for 1,000 custom cupcake flags! To date it is my largest order. It is also a pretty random one as they didn't use the flags on cupcakes!

They were included in kits that they sent out to their prospective clients as part of a contest! The kit included little stuffed aliens with my flags stuck in their hands.

The contest was to take photos of the aliens doing all kinds of things. It was great to see such creative thinking! You can see some of the entries at www.knurtureinvades.com.

What do you love the most about your work?

I love that while the products are essentially the same, they are each very unique in their own way.

Is there anything else you'd like to add for our Tying the Knot readers?

Readers can get 10% off in my shop! Use the code: TTK10

Bridal shoes sure are expensive! Not to mention slipping into new shoes for the big day can make your feet sore. Ouch. Do you have a pair of simple white shoes that you've worn and adore? There's an alternative way to walk down the aisle in style: Bridal Shoe Pins. With these, you can simply find a shoe that you're very familiar with or comfortable in (got to be able to dance at the reception!) and dress it up to match your gown. They come in all different shapes, colors, and sizes, and can range from feathery fluff to sparkling crystals.

Bonus: buy an extra few pins to put in your hair to match the shoes...or your bridesmaids!

Here are some lovely pins we found on Etsy!

Today we have a special Wedding Feature; Meet Lena and Anders, all the way from Norway!

Lena and Anders's wedding was held at Eidene GÂrd in Tj¯me, Vestfold in Norway. If you need to touch up on your geography, this particular location can be found on the south-east coast of Norway right by the sea! The Eidene GÂrd is a Red Cross center equipped with a restaurant that doubles as a party house. This beautiful location walked guests down a narrow pathway to a huge pier (1076 square feet!) which held all seventy guests for a private ceremony.

Now, unless you have a deep love for snow and ice, June through September are the best months to visit Norway, the Land of the Midnight Sun. But for Lena and Anders they held their wedding late May and were rewarded the warmest weekend of the year; 77 degrees and sun!

Lena bought her dress in a bridal store called "Dinn" in Oslo. Lena found herself a Cinderella-esque dress. Anders wore a traditional Norwegian folk costume, a red vest made by his mother.

Lena and Anders held a non-religious wedding arranged by the The Norwegian Humanist Association. This particular organization bases their ethics on human values, and can wed couples virtually anywhere - which is very difficult to do if you don't know someone from the church of Norway. Overall, the ceremony was simple and they let the beautiful seascape do all of the work. Lena's father walked her down the aisle to "Staralfur" by Sigur Roos, an Icelandic singer. Poems were read by Norwegian songwriters and songs were sang by Norwegian bands.

For the reception, Lena wanted to stick to comfortable and simple themes. She bought plenty of vintage vases for colorful flowers, bell jars to use as candle holders for the dinner tables, and customized garland that read "Lena <3 Anders" in red and black - all from Etsy and shipped from the USA! Instead of a guestbook, Lena and Anders opted for a guestbox where guests wrote greetings for the bride and groom. Polaroid pictures were taken, and guests rocked out on fun blow up instruments. There were red and white striped candy bags with confetti and wedding program designed by Creative Start Design. Their wedding cake was decorated with a hand-made crochet heart for a cake topping.

To complete their big day, Lena and Anders left the reception in style; rolling out in two little vintage Mini Morriss'; one bottle green and one beige!

Congratulations to the happy couple!

Who said Friday the 13th was unlucky? For some, it ís one of the most memorable days of their lives. Echoe and Craig met as freshman at Michigan Technological University and were together over 5 years when Craig proposed - on a Friday the 13th!

Craig had been out of town and was supposed to return on a Saturday due to a bad blizzard that had hit. It was about 8pm that Friday night when Echoe heard a knock at the door and Craig was there, in a suit, holding flowers. He got down on one knee, and the rest was a blur to Echoe!

Here are their fantastic engagement photos! With their adorable dog Lucca (named after a town in Italy where Echoe had visited).

The colored powder wars was inspired by this blog. Echoe and Craig wanted to go with something fun and unique, and they loved the idea so much that they tried their own version of it!

A big congratulations to Echoe and Craig!

At Tying the Knot, autumn is one of our favorite times of the year. The colors, the food, the crisp weather! Here are a few things that what we're definitely looking forward to this autumn.

The FOOD

It's the best time for our fall food favorites! Apple pies, pastries, smores, candy apples...and then all the candy you can eat come Halloween time.

Autumn food and delicious desserts

Caramel apples for autumn

Brrr! Coming in from outside when it starts to get chilly makes it hard to take off your coat. But this will soothe the transition: warm cider, hot chocolate, coffee or espresso.

The FASHION

It's the best time of the year for a light coat and a scarf; the fuzzier and more colorful the better. This is the time to start layering: sweaters, coats, leggings, knee socks. Too hot? Take one off! Too cold? Put one on! Easy and comfy.

Our favorite boots come out of the closet. Oh, how we've missed you!

The ACTIVITIES

Apple picking! It's a big favorite and makes for an enjoyable weekend outing. There's nothing more satisfying than leisurely strolling through an orchard while biting into a fresh apple. Not to mention its sweet taste after struggling to climb a branch or two to get to the best one on the tree. Pumpkin picking is also fun (not very good to eat unless you bake it into something!) and roasted pumpkin seeds are very satisfying after a day of carving one or two!

We love taking long walks/drives to see the colorful leaves. The trees have so many incredible colors, its almost like stepping into another world. The scenery really speaks for itself!

Orange leaves on a road

Fireplaces start to heat up. There's the sweet smell of smoke as the air gets cooler and crisp, and the warmth of the fire can keep you there for hours. Happen to have a wood stove? There is nothing better than sitting near one of those to read a book and warm your back.

Attending autumn weddings!

This season is one of the best times of year to throw a wedding. In Fall, there are a variety of colors and themes to choose from. Ideas can range from simple and clean, to the more extravagant and decorated. Plus foilage weddings are absolutely beautiful; the use of natural items really add character to floral arrangements, centerpieces, wedding cake embellishments, wreathes, and bouquets. Can't forget the delicious favors; caramel apples, homemade perserves or little bottles of maple syrup.

Karyn and Brandon had their marriage ceremony and small dinner reception in the old castle library of the Chateau Frontenac in Quebec Old City Canada. Their guest list was small and stress-free, only inviting their immediate family and a few close friends.

Karyn and Brandon maintained a strict budget for their wedding, spending no more than $5000 for the dress, meal, cake, hotel, flowers, programs, menu and favors. Karyn's gorgeous dress was from the Vera Wang White collection, one that is only carried in select David's Bridals. In memory of Karyn's grandfather, her flowers were Yellow Billy Balls, Queen Anne's Lace, and Peonies; the same ones that always grew at her grandfather's farm. Their photographer was a former student of Karyn's, Dustin Genereux, and it was his first wedding.

The ceremony was very personal; Karyn & Brandon both wrote their own vows, and family members read poems and messages that had everyone laughing and crying.

Karyn's love for art, design, and deer were prominent at the reception. She personally handmade and designed wooden place cards for her guests. Each card was printed with the names alongside an image of a deer; females received a doe and males received a buck. She even bought two handmade deer toppers for the cake. Karyn also designed the invites, menu, programs, and canvas tote bags which were filled with goodies for the ride home.

Karyn and Brandon's wedding invites carried a different theme from the overall wedding. Since they both loved music and many guests were travelling more than seven hours, they created CD album invites for the long car rides. Her chalk-typography design and the silk screened CD with a vinyl press varnish made it look and feel exactly like a record.

Karyn and Brandon had one more thing to add to their wedding to make it special: both got tattoos of Karyn's wedding logo.

Congratulations to the happy couple!
